Peter Harris AO
Peter Harris is a public policy adviser with extensive experience in Australian economic and social policy development.
In his early career, Peter served as Senior Private Secretary handling micro economic reform for then Prime Minister Bob Hawke. He later held senior positions in the Commonwealth Department of Transport ; in the private sector as Vice President in the Ansett/Air NZ group in 2001; and later served as Secretary of both the Department of Primary Industry and the Department of Sustainability and the Environment.
He led the public policy aspects of negotiations with Telstra over the establishment of the National Broadband Network as Secretary of the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (2009-13).Peter was Chairman of the Productivity Commission from 2013 to 2018. During this period, the Commission completed major work on public infrastructure, digital data and consumer rights, superannuation reform and finance sector competition.
Peter is currently an adviser to Tanarra Capital and a member of the Advisory Board of Global Infrastructure Partners. He was also CEO of the Commonwealth’s National Covid Coordination Commission in 2020.
Peter has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland (1975) and a Honorary Doctorate In Economics (UQ - 2024).
